Filmode

Film presets & photo editor for Android

Give every photo a film look, then make it yours.

Filmode lays a shelf of film looks over the photos you already have, puts the ones that suit each picture first, and hands you a full editor to finish the job. Save any edit as a preset, share it as a QR code, and keep the whole library on your phone.

Free to download: every editing tool, the Studio library, presets, QR sharing and .cube / .xmp import. Optional Filmode Pro adds Pro looks, Magic Filter, Replica Filter and full-resolution export. No watermark, no ads, no account. On iPhone, get our iOS app, Filmode: Film & LUT Editor, from the App Store.

Looks & presets

Looks start the edit. Presets finish it.

A film look is a colour recipe, a LUT, laid over your photo. Filmode gives you a strip of them, lets you dial each one in, and keeps the ones you love where you can find them again.

Film looks, with intensity

Tap a look and see it on your photo at once. Slide the intensity from a hint to the full recipe; the rest of your edit stays exactly where it was.

Matched to your photo

Filmode reads the colour and light of the picture in front of you and brings forward the looks that suit it. It works that out on your phone: nothing is uploaded to decide.

Favourites and your own categories

Star the looks you reach for and sort them into categories you name, so the wedding set and the street set never get mixed up.

Your presets

Save any edit as a preset: the look, tone, curves, effects, the lot. Apply it to the next photo in one tap and get the same feel across a whole set.

Bring your own .cube and .xmp

Import 3D LUTs in .cube format and .xmp presets from other editors. They join your looks and presets in Filmode, stored on your phone.

Presets as QR codes

Turn a preset into a QR code to show or send. A friend scans it with Filmode and the preset is theirs. The code carries only the preset's name and its adjustment numbers: no photo, nothing about you.

The Presets Store

Browse new looks with before-and-after samples and download the ones you want. Free looks are free for everyone; Pro looks come with Filmode Pro. Whatever you download stays on your phone and works offline.

Editor

A whole darkroom behind the look.

Every slider works live on the photo, every change can be undone, and the original is never touched. Compare with the untouched photo whenever you like.

On-device smarts Pro

  • Magic Filter
  • Replica Filter

Magic Filter adjusts the photo for you. Replica Filter reads the colours of a reference photo you pick and builds a look from them. Both run on your phone.

Studio

A library that never overwrites anything.

Photos you bring into Filmode are copied into the app's own private storage. Your edit is kept beside the copy as a small settings file, so you can change your mind about any photo, any time.

Non-destructive by design

The imported copy stays exactly as it came in. Nothing is baked into a picture until you export it, and the photo in your gallery is never changed.

No gallery permission needed

Photos come in through Android's photo picker, or from the Share and Edit menus of your gallery. Filmode only ever sees the photos you hand it.

Tags and sorting

Tag photos the way you think about them, then filter and sort the Studio grid to find the one you want.

Projects and versions

Group photos into projects, and keep several versions of the same photo side by side: a colour one and a black-and-white one, say.

Batch export

Export a whole set in one go, at the size and format you have chosen.

Export your way

JPEG or PNG into Pictures/Filmode, 800 to 3840 pixels on the long edge, or full resolution and custom sizes with Pro. Keep EXIF carries the date and camera details over from the original.

Camera

And a camera, if you want one.

A built-in manual camera shows your film look live in the viewfinder, takes stills and records video. It is entirely optional: Filmode is an editor first, and on a phone without a camera the camera simply is not offered.

  • The camera permission is asked for only when you open the camera.
  • The microphone only if you record video with sound.
  • Location only if you switch on saving it into photos you take. That is off by default.
  • Scanning a preset QR code does not use the camera permission at all: Google's code scanner handles it.

Your photos stay on your phone.

Filmode edits on the device, with your phone's own processor and graphics chip. There is no account to make and no cloud to sync to, and nothing the app sends over the internet contains a photo or anything taken from one.

Stays on your phone

  • Your photos: the imported copies, your edits, versions and projects.
  • Your presets, favourites, categories and imported .cube / .xmp files.
  • What the smart features read: Magic Filter, Replica Filter's reference photo and the "matched to your photo" suggestions are all worked out on the device.
  • Your location, if you let the camera save it: written into your own files, never sent.

Crosses the network, and only this

  • Presets Store downloads: the catalogue, sample pictures and the looks you pick, from our content server.
  • Anonymous usage and crash reports, through Firebase. Switch them off in Settings.
  • Google Play, to show Pro prices and run a purchase you start.
  • No account
  • No ads, no ad ID
  • No watermark
  • No photo uploads

Filmode Pro is sold through Google Play as a monthly or yearly subscription, or as a one-time lifetime purchase, at the price Google Play shows for your country. FAQ

Straight answers.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. Every edit, every look and every suggestion is worked out on your phone. The only things that travel over the network are Presets Store downloads coming in, anonymous usage and crash reports going out (which you can switch off in Settings), and Google Play purchases. None of them contains a photo, a thumbnail or a file name.

What happens to the photo in my gallery?

Nothing. Filmode copies the photo into its own private storage and edits the copy, keeping your changes in a small settings file beside it. When you export, a new file is written into Pictures/Filmode.

Because the Studio library lives inside the app, uninstalling Filmode or clearing its storage removes the library and your edits. Export anything you want to keep first; your original photos and your exports are not affected.

Can I use my own LUTs and presets?

Yes. Import .cube LUT files and .xmp presets through Android's file picker, and save any edit you make in Filmode as a preset of your own. Imported files stay on your phone.

What is inside a preset QR code?

Only the preset's name and its adjustment numbers. No photo, no account, no location, nothing that identifies you or your phone. Anyone who sees the code can read those numbers, so share it the way you would share the preset itself.

Scanning uses Google's code scanner from Google Play services. It reads the code on your phone and passes Filmode only the decoded text, which is why scanning needs no camera permission.

Why would Filmode ask for the camera, microphone or location?

Only for the optional built-in camera: the camera permission when you open it, the microphone if you record video with sound, and location if you turn on saving location into the photos you take (it is off by default). If you never use the built-in camera, Filmode never asks for any of them. It never asks for access to your photo library, because photos come in through Android's photo picker.

How big are exports, and where do they go?

Into Pictures/Filmode, where your gallery sees them straight away. Free exports are JPEG or PNG at 800, 1080, 2048 or 3840 pixels on the long edge. With Pro you can export at the photo's full resolution or at a custom size.

What does Pro cost, and can I cancel?

Pro is a monthly or yearly subscription, or a one-time lifetime purchase, at the price Google Play shows in your country. Cancel a subscription any time in the Google Play app under Payments & subscriptions; Pro stays on until the end of the period you paid for.
